1. Who we are
This website, www.theyorkshirecollege.com (the "website"), is operated by Yorkshire College Ltd, trading as Yorkshire College. We are a British Council-accredited English language school registered in England and Wales under company number 14445819. Our registered office is Oxford Place, Oxford Row, Leeds, LS1 3AU, United Kingdom.
This Cookie Policy explains what cookies and similar technologies are, which ones we use on the website, why we use them, and how you can control them. Please read it together with our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle personal information more generally.
2. What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that a website places on your computer, tablet or phone when you visit. They are widely used to make websites work, to make them work more efficiently, and to give the owners of a website information about how it is used.
Some cookies are session cookies, which are deleted when you close your browser. Others are persistent cookies, which stay on your device for a set period or until you delete them. Cookies set by the website you are visiting are first-party cookies. Cookies set by another organisation through content shown on the website - for example an embedded map - are third-party cookies.
This policy also covers similar technologies, such as your browser's "local storage", which we use in the same way as cookies to store small pieces of information on your device.
3. How we use cookies
We use cookies and similar technologies for the following purposes.
Strictly necessary. These are needed for the website to work. They keep the site secure, allow our enquiry and quote forms to be submitted safely, and remember whether you have accepted or rejected cookies so that we do not ask you on every page. They do not require your consent and cannot be switched off through our cookie banner, although you can block them in your browser (see section 6). If you do, some parts of the website may not work properly.
Analytics (optional). With your consent, we may use Google Analytics 4 to help us understand how visitors use the website - for example which pages are most popular, how visitors arrive at the site, and which countries our visitors come from. We use this information only to improve the website and the way we present our courses. These cookies are set only if you click "Accept" in our cookie banner.
Third-party content. Our pages include a Google Map showing the location of the college. When a page containing the map loads, Google may set its own cookies on your device. We do not control these cookies; they are governed by Google's privacy and cookie policies (see section 5).
We do not use cookies for advertising, and we do not sell information collected through cookies. If this ever changes, we will update this policy and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
4. The cookies and similar technologies we use
The table below lists the cookies and similar technologies used on the website.
| Name | Set by | What it does | Category | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XSRF-TOKEN | Yorkshire College (first party) | A security token that protects our online forms (for example Get a Quote and Contact) against cross-site request forgery attacks. | Strictly necessary | Session - expires about 2 hours after your last activity |
| yc_session | Yorkshire College (first party) | Keeps your visit in one continuous session as you move between pages, so the website can remember information you have entered, for example in a quote form. | Strictly necessary | Session - expires about 2 hours after your last activity |
| cookiesAccepted / cookiesRejected (browser local storage) |
Yorkshire College (first party) | Records whether you clicked Accept or Reject in our cookie banner, so that we do not ask you again on every page. | Strictly necessary | 12 months |
| _ga | Google Analytics (Google LLC) | Distinguishes one visitor from another using a random identifier, so that visits and page views can be counted. Set only if you accept analytics cookies. | Analytics (optional) | 2 years |
| _ga_XXXXXXXXXX | Google Analytics (Google LLC) | Keeps track of the current visit for analytics reporting. The letters after "_ga_" are our Google Analytics property ID. Set only if you accept analytics cookies. | Analytics (optional) | 2 years |
| NID, SOCS, AEC, __Secure-ENID and other Google cookies |
Google (through the embedded Google Map) | Set by Google when the map on our pages loads. Google uses them to remember preferences, keep its services secure and detect spam and abuse. We do not control these cookies. | Third party | Set by Google - typically 6 to 13 months (for example NID and AEC 6 months; SOCS and __Secure-ENID 13 months) |
Cookie names and lifetimes are set by the software that provides them and may change from time to time. We review this table when we update the website.
5. Third-party services and links
Google Maps. When the map in the footer of our pages loads, your browser connects to Google and Google may set cookies as described in section 4. Google explains how it uses cookies at policies.google.com/technologies/cookies and its privacy policy is at policies.google.com/privacy.
Google Analytics. If you accept analytics cookies, information about your use of the website - such as the pages you visit, the type of device and browser you use, and your approximate location based on a shortened form of your IP address - is sent to Google, whose servers may be located outside the United Kingdom. Google explains how it uses data from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. You can also stop Google Analytics from working in any browser by installing Google's opt-out add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
Fonts and code libraries. To display the website we load fonts from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com) and standard code libraries from jQuery (code.jquery.com) and Bootstrap (stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com). These services do not set cookies, but your browser sends your IP address to them when it fetches the files, in the same way as it does for any web page.
Links to other services. Our website contains links to WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn and Snapchat. If you click one of these links you will leave our website, and the service you visit will apply its own cookie and privacy policies. We do not embed these services' tracking tools in our pages.
6. How to manage your cookie choices
Our cookie banner. When you first visit the website we show a cookie banner. Click Accept to allow the optional analytics cookies, or Reject to use the website with strictly necessary cookies only. Your choice is stored on your device so that we do not ask you again on every page.
Changing your mind. You can change your choice at any time by clicking "Cookie settings" in the footer of any page, which will show the banner again. You can also delete our website's cookies and site data through your browser settings; the banner will then appear again on your next visit.
Browser settings. Most browsers let you see which cookies are stored on your device, block cookies from particular websites or from all websites, and delete cookies. The following links explain how:

7. Consent and the law
We use cookies in accordance with the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR) and UK data protection law, including the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. We set optional cookies only with your consent, and you can withdraw your consent at any time as described in section 6. Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of anything done before you withdrew it.
Any personal information collected through cookies is handled as described in our Privacy Policy, which also explains your rights under data protection law, including your right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time, for example if we add new features or tools to the website. Any changes will be posted on this page with a new "last updated" date. Where a change means we need your consent for new cookies, we will ask for it through the cookie banner.
